Gaines, on Brains: Catnip fever: why your cat acts high

We know this is PupQuest, not CatQuest (an important project for another time) but we thought this info on catnip was great~ Enjoy!
Gaines, on Brains: Catnip fever: why your cat acts high: There are few things in this world more entertaining than cats. Except for, perhaps, cats on catnip. Yes, "on" catnip. I speak of it lik...

Puppies are Not Toys.

Please visit www.pupquest.org before considering buying a pet for the holidays.
Sometimes when folks have some time off from work and school it may be a good time to bring a new 4 legged family member into the home. Usually, it is too hectic a time!
REPUTABLE breeders and shelters will help you to decide if this is a good time for you to get a pet.

PupQuest.org will help you to identify who is REPUTABLE.
HINT: if they will ship a puppy to you sight unseen.....no question about it, they are NOT reputable!

The Horse | Bramlage: Rest Needed to Keep Horses Sound

FINALLY racing insiders admit that rest is critical for a lame horse.
Interesting how they talk about creating a less hardy horse due to poor breeding choices.

Dozens Of Dogs Pulled From Amish Farm In Pickaway County

When will this ever end? Note at the end of the news report they mention that a bill to make rules stricter on these puppy farms/mills is being held up in the Ohio House.
You know........because laws that regulate small businesses are "job killers".
Don't forget to VOTE!!

Calculate the size cage the USDA would require for your dog.

Thanks to National Mill Dog Rescue for this great graphic. Visit www.pupquest.org to learn more about why USDA licensed means the breeder is by definition a Puppy Farm/Mill. USDA is the Dept of AGRICULTURE. For these "breeders" puppies are a cash crop, livestock. NEVER buy a pup sight unseen, ALWAYS visit where the pup was born and raised.http://www.animalarkshelter.org/animal/ShelterLife.nsf/CageSizeCalculator?OpenForm

USDA Proposes AWA Update

Thanks CAPS! Please support this update of the AWA. BUT remember, same PupQuest rules apply even if this change occurs.

NEVER buy a puppy sight unseen, ALWAYS visit where it was born and raised.

The regulations this new law would impose on Internet sale of pups only brings the puppy farm/mill up to MINIMUM, insufficient standards.
No REPUTABLE breeder would ever ship a pup to a stranger. Too stressful for the pup short term and too dangerous for the pup long term.

Heartbreak as death row dog Lennox destroyed by Belfast council - Northern Ireland, Local & National - Belfasttelegraph.co.uk

Ignorance wins. Please speak up against Breed Specific Legislation in your community.
This dog never did anything to deserve this fate, nor did his family.

Our biggest concern about BSL is the dangerous dogs it misses. What about the dogs that are truly unsafe but aren't a pit type breed? Who protects the community from those dogs?

Match-Up II Online from Center for Shelter Dogs

If a shelter or rescue you are considering adopting from does not do any type of temperament testing....walk away. It doesn't have to be Match Up but it should be a respected, time-tested method. Visit http://www.pupquest.org/about-rescues-and-shelters.html, scroll down and click on "temperament test" for more info.

Great webinar today, thanks!

Great webinar today. Thanks to ASPCA and NDAA! We learned a lot and were inspired to continue our efforts to educate the public on where to get a dog and where NOT to get a dog.

Great website about genetic testing for purebred dogs

http://WWW.vetga.com.au/index.html

Consumers and breeders serious about canine health should visit this Australian website. Lots of great info on genetic problems seen in purebred dogs.
Holding breeders to a standard is one of the most important ways to reduce animal suffering and consumer fraud.
When you purchase a pup with medical problems whether they are obvious early on or will manifest later in the dog's life, the dog suffers and so does your heart and wallet. ALL consumers who purchase a purebred or "designer" breed (expensive mutts!) should expect a breeder to be able to produce PROOF that their breeding dogs and or pups have been screened for common disorders. Otherwise, what are you paying for??
For more info on genetic problems you may inadvertently purchase if you buy a purebred dog visit    http://www.pupquest.org/for-vets.html

Very interesting article on Dog Star Daily

This article is a bit long but if you are interested in the topic of buying vs adopting dogs you will find it interesting.
We are so pleased that PupQuest was mentioned twice and is seen as an important resource to help folks find reputable shelters or breeders!

PupQuest is much more PRO ADOPTION than purchase but we don't believe that accusing well meaning people of NOT adopting is the way to stop shady breeders. When we accuse we lose the opportunity to educate that consumer and when WE lose them THEY get to take total advantage! "THEY" being the disreputable greedy breeders.

What do you think??

Breeding Contempt | Why is the USDA Bending Over Backwards to Accommodate Our Nation’s Puppy Mills?

This is difficult information to read but it is what is happening to dogs every day.
This may not be a prioroty for USDA but why is it not a priority for consumers? We have the power to shut down these puppyfarms/mills by not buying from them.
NEVER buy a puppy sight unseen over the Internet, it more than likely comes from a puppy mill. NEVER buy a dog from a pet shop. It really is that simple.

SLATE article about how hard some rescues make it to adopt!

Animal rescuers, what do you think of this article? PupQuest thinks there may be some truth to it!
How do we find a balance between rescuers who seem to think NO ONE is good enough to adopt and "breeders/rescuers" who sell to anyone with a credit card?
Read A Word About Adoption Applications on our About Shelters/Rescues Page. http://www.pupquest.org/about-rescues-and-shelters.html

Proposed Ohio Dog Auctions Act

Proposed Ohio Dog Auctions Act Stops Distribution For Puppy Mill Breeders » DogHeirs | Improving Canine Health and Safety

Sometimes people don't believe PupQuest when we tell them that puppy farmers get their dogs from dog auctions. Even most people who are aware of puppy farms/mills don't know how bad it really is. This is considered AGRICULTURE.

Truth is stranger than fiction!

Follow PupQuest for hints on how to find a healthy, well socialized puppy from a reputable source.

Truth is stranger than fiction!!
These are some actual quotes from "breeder's" web sites

"Will ship within the US at the customer's expense"
"sold to the happiest 11 year old in the world in California" Sale price $5,000 from a "breeder" in OH
"maltipoochi puppies" females $1,100 "We sell unconditional love"
"First pick in the litter cost $10,000US dollars"

PLEASE do not ever consider buying a dog from these greedy opportunistic people.
Never buy a puppy sight unseen, always visit where the pups were born and raised. Check out PupQuest.org for great tips on how to spot a disreputable breeder.
HINT: comments anything like the ones above should be a red flag!!!!

Children and dangerous dog breeds. REPOSTED

Please read!!!

If you are an owner of a dog that belongs to a 'dangerous breed' category and you also have a child or a visiting small child please take this as a warning.

Don't leave your dog with a small child unattended under any circumstances!!!

Only one little moment was enough for this to happen!!
