I remember the first time I went to the BIG E in Springfield, MA. The first thing we saw as we entered the gates was an elephant ride. Yup, kids climbing onto an elephant's back for a walk around the area. Having spent a lot of time in Africa and not being a fan of captive wildlife, my heart broke.
Then we went to the horseshow. Full disclosure, I am a horseback rider, I have been riding since I was so young I have no memory of not being able to ride. The classes running at the time we entered the indoor arena were the BIG LICK saddleseat classes. I stood at the rail wanting to get a closer look at these horses, their oversized hooves, distorted fetlocks and pasterns, broken set tails, etc. My already broken heart started to bleed. The abuse and exploitation of these horses and the fact that they are rewarded in this riding discipline with blue ribbons is shameful.
Standing there so close to these magnificent animals it occured to me, I would rather be that elephant. A Sophie's choice indeed.
