Video Appears To Show Animal Abuse By NYC Horse Carriage Industry « CBS New York
Public safety isn't talked about enough. Horses left unattended, children standing in front of or almost under carriage is terrifying if you understand horses. Horses are fight or FLIGHT animals. In the crowded, noisy city flight is their only choice when scared. It is dangerous for everyone including the horses.
Horses don't belong in traffic. Don't believe people when they tell you we are against all "use" of horses or all cariage driving. That is a LIE. Many of us who work to ban carriage horses from city streets are what one would call "horse people". That is how we know it is wrong.
Please don't hire a horse drawn carriage in the city.

9 Investigates: Breeders still selling sick puppies online
9 Investigates: Breeders still selling sick puppies online
This breeder was exposed on TV and brought to court. She is STILL selling pups. NEVER buy a pup sight unseen, ALWAYS visit where it was born and raised.
Don't buy or adopt a pup in a parking lot!! What about this doesn't sound shady......?
If a well known reputable shelter has a mobile adoption van it will be well marked and they will have a building and phone number you can verify.
BUYER BEWARE is not just to protect you as a consumer it is to protect puppies and their parents from abuse.

By now most have you have probably heard about the case of a veterinarian in Texas who allegedly shot a feral cat with a bow and arrow. This came to light because she posted this photo on Facebook and bragged about it.
Why the hype around this story? Is it because of our expectation of veterinarians? Is it because in general, hunting, trapping and many forms of recreational hunting are accepted and encouraged in the veterinary field? Is this victim particularly offensive?
Just asking question here, don't know the answers. But one thing I do know is that this woman is a human being and the people calling for her death and for her to be mutilated by arrows are no "better" that they think she is.

WCAX Exclusive Investigation: Vt. pig farmer fined - WCAX.COM Local Vermont News, Weather and Sports-
This is a cautionary tale. It is not likely that this is an isolated case. Local, humane, etc have become buzz words. Are consumers feeling guilty about eating factory raised meat? If you really want to be sure your meat is humanely raised, antibiotic and hormone free you need to do your homework.
Impressed that someone at the slaughterhouse spoke up. They probably saw obvious signs for a long time.
It isn't just livestock that can spread diseases from one area to another. Puppy transport has done the same thing. To the uneducated it may seem innocent but the truth is, large scale movement of animals without proper regulation and veterinary oversight is dangerous and inhumane. The farmer may take a financial hit but the disease outbreak would cause terrible physical suffering and likely death to the animals. What do you think?

The Dog Aggression Epidemic | Victoria Stilwell Positively
Just another reason to NEVER buy a pupy sight unseen online.
Proper socialization is paramount to having a well adjusted, stable dog. Many people use that as an excuse to buy a puppy and raise it themselves so they can be sure it will be properly raised. BUT, proper socialization needs to start way before you should have the pup in your home and if you meet an adult dog that is for adoption, an experienced person can tell if that dog has a stable temperament. What you see is what you get......no guessing on what the genetics or very early experiences of your new pup may bring!

AKC.....Stop Registering Puppy Mill Dogs.
Why Won't the AKC Stop Puppy Mills?
Time Magazine once said that the best use of AKC papers is to housetrain your puppy. AKC papers should the MINIMUM you expect from a breeder. The only thing AKC registration may tell you in that the puppy may be a "purebred". MAYBE. "Breeders" cheat all the time. As a practicing veterinarian I knew breeders who would register a little of 10 pups with AKC when there were really only 7. So....who were the extra three AKC papers for?
This type of deception and much worse happens all the time, AKC doesn't check.
BEWARE that AKC has no health standards that they enforce. They do make lots and lots of suggestions and put on a good public face but those suggestions are not required for registration and no one checks. Send money, get AKC papers.
Don't be fooled by USDA licensed "breeders" selling AKC registered puppies. USDA in the Dept of AGRICULTURE, your puppy is a cash crop treated like livestock.
No matter how you feel about how we raise hogs or chickens most people agree that the intended use for that animal is quite different than the intended use for a pup. Puppies will often be expected to be part of the family, sleep on the kids' beds and be friendly. If a puppy is raised in a chaotic, dirty, crowded cage during its most sensitive behavioral development period expecting a healthy, social dog is folly.
Proper positive socialization of young puppies is critical. Visit pupquest.org and learn what else reputable breeders do so you won't be fooled into supporting animal cruelty and consumer fraud!
